Personal
Statement: Having practiced psychotherapy for over a
decade, I have come to believe that there is no "one size fits
all". Every person I work with will have a unique story about
the life experiences that have contributed to the development of who
they are. Since each person is different, therapy is tailored to the
needs of the individuals, couples or families that I work with.
What I have come to believe, is
that an effective therapy, evolves in several phases that invite a
full range of emotion, reflection and growth. The first stage of an
effective treatment is the development of a trust based and honest
relationship between therapist and client, with both agreeing on the
issues that need to be addressed.
Secondly, it is central that therapist and client confront the
origins of what has become problematic in thought, feeling and
action towards self and others; this allows the client to begin
healing unattended wounds from the past.
Thirdly, the therapist and client must work together to develop new
skills that will allow the client to change problematic patterns of
behavior. Lastly, is the client's accepting responsibility for
shaping the direction of his/her' life, and living in the here and
now. I draw from many different theoretical models in my work,
including family systems, psychodynamic, existentialist and various
addiction treatment strategies.
While eclectic in my approach to theory, the focus of therapy always
remains on the client. I see many multi-addicted men, e.g., chemical
dependency, sexual compulsivity, etc., and their families in my
practice. I enjoy this work, and have seen people reclaim their
lives through therapy, family healing and taking responsibility for
their behavior. Psychotherapy is not easy work, but the rewards you
will experience are amazing.
